Cranberry Extract

Cranberries for UTI

Cranberry extract or juice (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is beneficial for the prevention of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Approximately 25% of women have at least one UTI in their lifetime. Research has shown that cranberry extract prevents the adhesion of Escherichia coli (E.coli) to the bladder wall, which makes it easier to wash bacteria out with the urine. Cranberry extract contains 2 constituents, fructose and proanthocyanidins that inhibit E.coli. There have been several studies on the benefit of cranberry extract for UTI. One six-month study in elderly women suggests that drinking 300ml per day of cranberry juice reduced the symptoms by nearly 50%. In a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 153 elderly women were given either 300ml per day of cranberry juice or a placebo drink. Urine was tested each month. The researchers found that daily ingestion of cranberry juice reduced the frequency of UTI symptoms. Researchers conclude that cranberry juice and extract have biological effects against bacterial adhesion in the bladder. Cranberry extract has no significant adverse effects and is both safe and well tolerated. For those concerned about the high sugar content of cranberry juice, oral supplements are a viable option.
